Second after the International Club on my “Clubs at Marymount” series is the Global Charity Project!

The Global Charity Project was started in 2008 by two students, one of which is our current Student Government President Katy Barker, to “bring together students of Marymount University to help build a sustainable future for people everywhere.” We pick an initiative every semester to raise funds for to run sustainable development projects and introduce a sense of humanitarianism and philanthropy in the Marymount community. Past initiatives include:

  • a well construction project in Masongbo-loko, Sierra Leone
  • field and cultivation for Our Lady, Queen of the Family Girl’s Secondary School in Kahama, Tanzania
  • Arlington Youth Philanthropy right here in Arlington, Virginia
  • ProNino USA in El Progreso, Honduras

And for our subsequent semester, we’re working with Arlington Academy of Hope. I won’t give too much details but together we’re raising money to provide supplies and construction for the Bududa district in eastern Uganda.

I’m really excited to work with this group because like the International Club, it works to foster global understanding, which is a huge, huge part about Marymount University. I think the diversity here plays an important part and it manifests itself into the projects and ventures the school initiates and the students who decide to give back through the Global Charity Project!
